Enhance your chance of success! How many times have you
heard those exact words, if not very similar prose? Every
management guru paraphrases the message to some degree.
Each one does it with certainty. Why? It makes perfect sense.
In simplest terms, it all comes down to showcasing value—no
matter what you do, where you do it, or how you get it accom-
plished. Every customer is looking for new and better solutions
that bring with them increased efficiencies, peaks in productivity
and a positive impact on the bottom line.
Step into the world of printing/converting and the story is no different. This edition’s editorial
mix clearly attests to the fact. Diverse and demanding customers have caused traditional flex-
ographers to turn to multifunctional cross platforms, often marrying flexography with screen,
offset, digital and gravure processes, to deliver high quality, bold, brilliant graphics. Those
elements prove time and time again to be a critical key to competing in the fast paced global
On the following pages, you’ll find screen, sustainability and digital complements/components
sharing the spotlight. Many say things are trending digital—slowly but surely. Others have a
different view and contend that customized modular print stations, joining two or more analog
technologies, are setting new precedents and giving printers highly specific customized tools
that, when deployed, diversify their individual product offerings. At the same time, they bring
the plant functional benefits and aesthetic appeal.
One combination after another is reshaping the packaging workflow:
• Setup, makeready and mounting times have fallen
• Registration and tension control is automated
• Color management is now a true science and the gamut of possibilities associated with it
• Waste generated, while always a concern, is trending toward all time lows
• Fine lines and solid graphics are being comingled in a single print with no cause for
• Lean, modular production lines are being established with tight budgets, expected out-
comes and customer acceptance (shorter pressruns with rapid delivery) in mind
Talk about intrinsic value! In today’s packaging circles, it’s everywhere! Tactile impressions,
opaque inks, metallic accents, purposeful embossing—braille and other effects—are common,
everyday occurrences; yet they once challenged our most seasoned operators.
One pass printing crosses over form and format, be it bags, pouches, pillow packs, labels,
shrink sleeves, cartons or corrugated and in mold containers. Technology continues its march
forward to the benefit of one and all. Multi process printing has moved from concept to reality,
bringing true dividends to its proponents and practitioners.
each year to

among the pouches and stickpacks is
the juggernaut that is the labels market.
In that vein, FLEXO iQ’s third issue
takes a look at the world of labels from
its unique vantage point. That includes
trends in the digital print market—many
of them focused on labels—screen
printing’s use as complementary to
flexography, and what some FTA
members are exhibiting at Labelexpo
Europe at the end of this month.
Rounding out the issue are a look
at modern consumer preferences,
sustainability thoughts from four member
companies, and a product showcase
with bag, hot stamping/embossing and
pouch making equipment.
